This old vineyard in Calatayud, Spain used to sell its entire production to a coop, but decided a few years ago to do a custom bottling for Eric Solomon, one of Polaner Selections' primary suppliers. The Calatayud D.O. is located in the most western part of the Spanish province of Zaragoza. The vineyards of San Alejandro cover a total of 1100 hectares in the villages of Miedes, Codos, Ruesca, Orera, Mara, Villalba de Perejiles, Belmonte de Gracián, Atea, and Sediles.

Wine Advocate 90 points (Jun 2011) The 2009 Las Rocas is 100% Garnacha sourced from 80-year-old vines from the DO of Calatayud with 25% of the wine aged in wood. It is a forward, savory, ripe, succulent offering that should prove to be a crowd-pleaser. It is an outstanding value that will deliver enjoyment over the next 5 years.
The popular Las Rocas brand, developed by importer Eric Solomon, was purchased by E. & J. Gallo within the past 2 years but Solomon was hired on to make the blend. Obviously, production will be increasing dramatically although Solomon believes the same level of quality can be maintained. As a post-script, the old-vine bottling was not ready to be shown. |
